Yes, despite both of us being native
Houstonians, this was our first hurricane. I was born after Alicia in 1983 and Jeremy was out of town on a family vacation then, I think, so we didn't know what to expect. I was around for Tropical Storm Allison in 2001 and thought it would be similar - some people would be flooded and lose power, but I was at the movies right after, wondering why cell service was so spotty. No big deal, right?
Ummm, wrong. I got off work early on Thursday and was off Friday also to prepare. Due to the massive number of pine trees surrounding our house and that we live in a flood zone, we decided to hunker down at Jeremy's parents'
townhome near Memorial Park. They have a huge generator, just in case we lost power, and Judy had done her fair share of grocery shopping. I hit Randall's just for some snacks really and I grabbed a box of water just because it was one of the last ones left. I baked all afternoon on Thursday while my oven still had power. We moved furniture away from our windows but that was mainly all we did to prepare. I even packed some cute outfits to go hunker down because I really thought by Sunday we'd be at church and having a nice dinner out. Again, I was so wrong. The storm actually wasn't too scary for me - yes, the wind was loud, but that's kind of it. We stayed up watching the news and playing Scrabble until around midnight and I had to get some sleep, I was exhausted! So I dozed and Jeremy watched the news until around 3am when the eye wall was near us. The power blinked on and off for a while and we saw lots of blue flashes outside from transformers blowing, and we finally lost it for good around 3:30 or 4am. It was warm without a/c, but we fell asleep again. Then we woke up the next morning to something I have (thankfully) never experienced...no water! I didn't even know that was a possibility after a hurricane! Sure enough, we had to use buckets to flush the commode and bottled water to brush our teeth. Tony and Judy got the generator all set up, so we were extremely lucky to have fans, a fridge, a lamp and TV with rabbit ears so we could at least see what was going on. Jeremy's cousin Amy, her husband Chris and their daughter Katy came by around lunch, so it was fun to play with the baby! Judy cooked us some great meals too - we had sloppy
joe's for dinner one night and a roast for lunch! We also got to survey the damage at our house. Praise Jesus, our house did not flood, leak or have any other damage! A large pine tree was uprooted in our front yard and another one was sheared off about 20 feet up, but nothing on our house or on our neighbor's. A small tree was uprooted in the backyard and knocked over a portion of our fence and a neighbor's tree fell through the other side of our fence and knocked down the power lines in our backyard. The two things we thought we might lose - the back fence and a rickety old potting shed - stood like there wasn't even a storm! Our whole block was very lucky, actually. Only one house had damage to the back, and our neighbor lost his carport. The past 2 days we worked in the yard to clean up all the debris, stood the left fence back up, and removed the back fence (it was rotting anyway). Yesterday we had the sheared-off tree taken down and they cut up the uprooted tree. We still have a huge root system/stump, but that can be taken care of later. We're waiting on the electric company to take care of the back tree since it's tangled in lines.
Our house still doesn't have power and I've been told it took 2 weeks to restore power after Allison, so we're not very optimistic. There's also a tree ominously hanging over our house that fell from a neighbor's yard 2 doors down and is wedged against another tree. Tony and Judy and both my parents are still without power too...I sure hope one of us gets it soon! My mom's house
fared well but my dad has a tree on his house. I don't think it's leaking though, so that's good at least. He and Heather took all the kids up to
Longview and my mom and Jim and Charlie (the dog) went up to Austin. Jeremy and I went back to work today, and it is nice to be in a/c and have the
internet back! I also saw
Starbuck's at Post Oak and
Westheimer is open, so
yay! It's the little things!
A few positive things from Ike:
1. When we were waiting to be seated at California Pizza Kitchen, we spoke with a older woman whose power was also still out and we got to talking about how we're so lucky and some people don't have running water ever, etc. and she said that when she feels sorry for herself she thinks about her friend in India who is preaching the Gospel and has been beaten 14 times, the last time landing him in the hospital for 10 days. We can just go to church and talk about our faith without a thought in the world, so that made me feel not sorry for myself anymore!
2. We have gotten to know lots of our neighbors from this and it's been wonderful! They're so neighborly and caring - one brought ice back for people from Austin, one is sharing a generator and cooking for other neighbors. It's been a blessing! I can't wait to get through all this and plan a post-Ike block party!
3. The gorgeous weather! What would be we doing if it was 95 degrees and 90% humidity?? The tree guy from New York didn't seem to think it was a blessing but us Houstonians know better! God has truly blessed those without a/c and who have to be working outdoors right now!
Please pray for those who have lost homes, cars, etc. in Houston and for those in Galveston and along the coast. Their experience has obviously been far different from ours and our hearts break for those who have lost homes, family and pets. We're also thinking about all the city workers and those who have come in to help from elsewhere - frustrations are high right now, but we know they're working 24/7 to take down trees, clear debris and get water and power back to everyone!
We'll post pictures soon!
